DIAGNOSTIC PROTOCOLS

Pelvic Ultrasound / Infertility Screening
Pelvic ultrasound may be used for measurement and evaluation of female pelvic organs. Ultrasound assessment of the pelvis may include, but is not limited to, the following: Size, shape, and position of the uterus and ovaries. In the pelvic assessment for infertility we would not be able to assess the fallopian tubes unless abnormalities such as a hydrosalphinx is present.

We also offer Follicle tracking with baseline and follow up scan

First Trimester Ultrasound
Viability / Dating and gestation

Optimal time 6 to 13 weeks
This scan is ideal for anyone who has slight concerns or had a previous miscarriage. It can provide reassurance, particularly important if there has been vaginal bleeding or an ectopic pregnancy is suspected. We are able to provide patient with confirmation of an intrauterine pregnancy, determine viability, number of fetuses and accurate dates, major abnormalities can be excluded but is dependent on gestation.

First Trimester Anomaly with Nuchal Translucency risk assessment.
*(Not available at present)

Optimal time 11 to 14 weeks
First Trimester screening allows more time for important decisions to be made about caring for the baby during pregnancy and after birth.

When mothers are above the age of 35, there is an increased risk of congenital abnormalities such as Down’s Syndrome. As the average age of expecting mothers in the UK is on the increase, it makes sense to have a screening examination. (Age alone is not the only factor involved so we offer this examination to woman of all ages).

Fetal wellbeing and dating.
Any time 16 weeks onwards
This will confirm the sex and give the approximate fetal age. The fetal wellbeing can be conducted at any age providing basically the same information as the Third Trimester Scan.

Second Trimester
Anomaly Scan

Optimal time 20 to 23 weeks
The sonographer will perform a thorough assessment of all fetal anatomy including fetal biometry (measurements) to ensure normal growth and exclude any major structural defects and soft markers for chromosomal defects. The sonographer will provide a full written report including graphs. Ultrasound alone unfortunately cannot exclude chromosomal or rare genetic defects.

Third Trimester Ultrasound
Optimal time 28 weeks onward
During this scan, we measure the baby's head, abdomen and limbs. We estimate the weight of the baby. We determine the fetal position. We also look at how the baby is moving, the amount of amniotic fluid and the location of the placenta. The sex can be determined but this becomes more difficult as the pregnancy approaches term. We believe it is very useful to have such a scan at about 36 week’s gestation to give an approximate fetal weight. Routine growth scans are not currently offered by the NHS.
